Today’s event was similar to last year’s in that the prizes were up for grabs right into the last round of the Quiz. The performance of all the teams in the Quiz was absolutely impressive, and it was exciting to watch all of them do so well on so many questions on the physics and chemistry of materials. The Quiz rounds did have a few hiccups along the way, but everyone was pretty sporting and generous.

It’s also time to thank all the graduate student volunteers who ran the show: Urvashi Bothra, Indrani Biswas, Abhishek Agarwal, Chaitali Patil, Rahul Kumar, Rakesh R. Kamath, Naveen Kumar, Rahul G.R., Shailendra Verma, B. Girish, Md. Arif, Antareep Sharma, and Prachi Pragnya.

Congratulations, BMQ-13 Prize Winners!

It’s now time to celebrate the Prize Winners by congratulating them:

The event went well yesterday, and we hope all the participants had a great time showing off their knowledge of physics, chemistry, and materials science in the written test. The Quiz round itself proved to be wonderfully competitive, with a tight race all the way to the final round. The intermediate rounds (dumb charades and connecting the pictures) brought some levity to the event; we thank all the participants for being so sporting!

It’s also time to thank all the graduate students who helped make this event possible: Ashish Shekhar, Arka Lahiri, Chaitanya Joshi, R. Lakshminarayan, and Naveen Kumar (who ran the entire show), as well as Vyasa Sastry, Hariprasad, Shalini Roy Koneru, Kaustubh Venkatraman, and Abhishek Sharma (who couldn’t be with us yesterday). We also thank Shikhar Jha, Raghunath Joshi and R. Madhavan who helped us indirectly through their contributions to BMQ in earlier years.

The BMQ-13 Prize Winners will go to Kalpakkam to participate in the Prof. Brahm Prakash Memorial Materials Quiz (BPMMQ) to be held on 21 September 2013. We wish them all the best!

And we wish BPMMQ-13 all success!

Our Hearty Congratulations to …

Winners of BMQ-06

We had a great BMQ this morning, with some of the most wonderful students participating in the event. Collectively, their performance in the first part of the event — the written test — was absolutely spectacular. They simply amazed us all by answering so many questions that are so clearly beyond their text books. Our congratulations to everyone who participated.

The top four teams in the written test went into the Quiz, which had eight ‘regular’ rounds of questions that required a sharp answer (which would fetch the team 4 marks each for direct questions, and 2 each for ‘passed’ questions), and two special rounds.

In the first special round, each team had to guess the material about which the Quiz Master would give clues; the team would get 8, 6 or 4 marks for naming the material after the first, second or third clue, respectively.

The second special round had two kinds of ‘dumb charades’: the first kind is the usual one, in which one person mimes while the other person keeps trying to guess the word or the phrase. The second kind, which was even more fun, is called ‘gang mime’ or ‘group mime’, in which miming goes on simultaneously for all the teams!

At the end of it all, the following teams emerged victorious in BMQ-06. The First Prize went to:

J. Bharath and Adarsh M. Kumar
National Public School, Rajaji Nagar.

And, the Second Prize went to:

Saurabh Chandra and Uday Shankar
Kendriya Vidyalaya, Indian Institute of Science.

The other two teams that made it to the Quiz were: Akash Das Sarma and P. Darshan (National Public School, Rajaji Nagar), and S. Kaushik and Anoop Koyily (Kendriya Vidyalaya, ASC Centre).

Our hearty congratulations to all the participants. Special congratulations to the winners of the First and Second Prizes. We wish them all the best in the Big Event in Kalpakkam in two weeks!
