If you don’t know what BMQ is, here’s a quick answer: it stands for the Bangalore Materials Quiz. Students of Classes XI and XII (or PU Courses) in schools and PU Colleges in and around Bangalore are eligible to participate in it. As the name suggests, the focus of BMQ will be on Materials Science and Materials Engineering.

For a longer answer, please read the FAQ from 2006.

The top two teams in BMQ-09 will represent Bangalore in the Prof. Brahm Prakash Memorial Materials Quiz (BPMMQ), an international event organized by the Kalpakkam Chapter of the Indian Institute of Metals. This year’s BPMMQ is scheduled for 18-19 September 2009.

with 3 comments

Welcome to the 2006 Edition of the Bangalore Mateirals Quiz (BMQ-06).

Who can participate? BMQ is open to students of Classes XI and XII (or, pre-university — PU — courses) in schools and PU colleges in Bangalore. Students must be nominated by their schools (yes, an official letter is mandatory). Each school can nominate at the most two teams of two students each.

Participants from last year cannot be nominated.

When and where is the Quiz? BMQ-06 will be held on 16 September 2006 (Saturday) in the Department of Metallurgy, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore – 560012.

What is the format? BMQ-06 will have two parts: a common written test for all the teams, followed by the Quiz round with the top four teams in the test as the participants.

What is the Prize? Actually, there are two Prizes for the top two teams in the (final) Quiz. The first is the Dr. S. Ramamurthy Award which consists of an Award Certificate and books worth about Rs. 500. That’s from us (who are ‘us’? see below).

BMQ’s top two teams also get a chance to participate in the international level Prof. Brahm Prakash Memorial Materials Quiz (BPMMQ) to be held at Kalpakkam on 30 September 2006.

How do we sign up? You can’t — not directly, anyway. Your school must nominate you — and your team mate(s). The registration page has the details. Just make sure the nomination letter reaches us (by post or fax) on or before 12 September 2006 (Tuesday).

Who is behind BMQ? It is organized by the Bangalore Chapter of the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM), India’s premier professional society of metallurgists and materials scientists.

The event is coordinated by graduate student volunteers in the Department of Metallurgy. They put together the written test and the Quiz, and they are the Quiz Masters.

Who is behind BPMMQ? The Brahm Prakash Memorial Materials Quiz, the grand international event at Kalpakkam, is organized by the Kalpakkam Chapter of the Indian Institute of Metals.

While the Bangalore Chapter of IIM will take care of travel expenses of the top two teams from BMQ, and the Kalpakkam Chapter will take care of local hospitality.

The winners of BPMMQ at Kalpakkam will be invited to the IIM’s annual flagship event — the Natioanl Metallurgists Day Celebrations — to be held on 14 November 2006 at Jamshedpur; the main event consists of an Awards Ceremony, where the BPMMQ winners will receive their awards.
